He was smart enough to speak in general terms, broadly, of the human condition, and not to specify anything.If you don't get what Twain was after saying, the outrage he expressed through his writing, you have seriously missed out on one of the great and specifically American thinkers of all time.To ignore Mark Twain and pretend to understand American thought is akin to ignoring Bill Shakespeare and pretending to understand British thought.You may say that Twain is no Shakespeare, and I will not argue with you there, but that's not the point. The point is that intellectually Twain is to American thought what Shakespeare is to the British.Mark Twain (SL Clemens) successfully managed to skewer all aspects of American society generations before it was agreeable to do so.He did it in a way that you have to respect if you have anything at all like a sense of humanity.
